To Care for the Earth

It is always been my personal advocacy to nurture the nature. I could not point out when my "love" for environment began. I just grow up to be an environment-friendly and a great lover of adventure. I think the most concrete memory of my first encounter with Mother Nature was when my siblings would fetch fire woods in Torres, Montenegro, and Vitorillos (private properties of forest owned by rich businessmen) at… Continue

(i read this blog at YFC Davao's site and it has caught my attention! somehow there's a conniving truth to Ms. Gravador's conviction of her article. read for yourself and find that answer deep within you! lines may be true to some extent, if not; prove me wrong!)

Stand Up and Take Action

Experts estimate that close to 97% of the original forest cover of the country has been logged, above 50% of which is believed to have been logged illegally. Today, less than 3% of ancient forest remain in small, scattered patches. The Asian Development Bank, in its Key Indicators for 2005 reports that among Asian countries, Philippines has the worst record of preserving its forest.

Tomorrow, let us act towards breaking this chain. Stand up and take action!

Save Mother Earth

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a major worldwide tree planting campaign. Under the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, people, communities, business and industry, civil society organizations and governments are encouraged to enter tree planting pledges online on www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign

with the objective of planting at least one billion trees worldwide each year. In a call to further individual and collective action, UNEP has set a new goal of planting 7 billion trees by the end of 2009. The campaign strongly encourages the planting of indigenous trees and trees that are appropriate to the local environment.

CLUSTERDOS advocates for the United Nations Millenium Development Goals!

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world’s main development challenges. The MDGs are drawn from the actions and targets contained in the Millennium Declaration that was adopted by 191 member countries of the United Nations, during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.

This unprecedented global framework for development is a crucial step towards ending poverty and inequality.

However, at the halfway point to the 2015 deadline for the achievement of the Goals, we have seen some progress, but much more needs to be done. Urgent action must be taken by nations if they are to fulfill their promise to achieve the MDGs. Since agreeing to make the MDGs a key framework for international action and cooperation to reduce poverty, much progress has been made.

But despite the gains, no region in the world is on-track to achieve all of the Goals, and some regions are off-track on many of them. Uurgent action is needed to implement sound policies to achieve the Goals set in 2000, and deliver on the promise made to the world’s poor in the Millennium Declaration:

“We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanising conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are currently subjected”

The eight MDGs break down into 21 quantifiable targets that are measured by 60 indicators. The eight MDGs are:

1. eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. achieve universal primary education
3. promote gender equality and empower women
4. reduce child mortality
5. improve maternal health
6. combat HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases
7. ensure environmental sustainability
8. develop a global partnership for development

The MDGs:

* synthesise, in a single package, many of the most important commitments made separately at the international conferences and summits of the 1990s;
* recognise explicitly the interdependence between growth, poverty reduction and sustainable development
* acknowledge that development rests on the foundations of democratic governance, the rule of law, respect for human rights and peace and security
* are based on time-bound and measurable targets accompanied by indicators for monitoring progress;
* bring together, in the eighth Goal, the responsibilities of developing countries with those of developed countries.

"Be the change you want to see in the world"
-Ghandi

The overall value of a human life seems to decrease in the world. Humans have spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical needs. These needs are all equally important.

This is a moving video of Daughtry, which centers to the awareness of what's going on in our environment today. It speaks to us, that change starts from within. Jesus is the Light and the Gift of Vision, we are His instrument to spread that light to the world.

We can make a difference. Before It's too late... Act now!

Sometimes, a hug is all what we need.

Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man who's sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread accross the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe inspiring. In the Spirit of the free hugs campaign, PASS THIS TO A FRIEND and HUG A STRANGER! After all, If you can reach just one person.

How it all started:

I'd been living in London when my world turned upside down and I'd had to come home. By the time my plane landed back in Sydney, all I had left was a carry on bag full of clothes and a world of troubles. No one to welcome me back, no place to call home. I was a tourist in my hometown.

Standing there in the arrivals terminal, watching other passengers meeting their waiting friends and family, with open arms and smiling faces, hugging and laughing together, I wanted someone out there to be waiting for me. To be happy to see me. To smile at me. To hug me.

So I got some cardboard and a marker and made a sign. I found the busiest pedestrian intersection in the city and held that sign aloft, with the words "Free Hugs" on both sides.

And for 15 minutes, people just stared right through me. The first person who stopped, tapped me on the shoulder and told me how her dog had just died that morning. How that morning had been the one year anniversary of her only daughter dying in a car accident. How what she needed now, when she felt most alone in the world, was a hug. I got down on one knee, we put our arms around each other and when we parted, she was smiling.

Everyone has problems and for sure mine haven't compared. But to see someone who was once frowning, smile even for a moment, is worth it every time.

Why Did it get banned?

Public liability fear and red tape. But its all okay now! Make sure tocheck your local laws before embarking on your Hugathon!

Why Do I Serve God?
by Eymard Alvin Babista
YFC Davao

While having my prayer time a shocking question was raised to me by God He asked me why I serve. What is the reason for me to spend my time, talent, and treasure in serving Him? I didn`t expect that I couldn`t answer God right I way. I now started to reflect and ask myself why? As I continue I reasoned out maybe because I would like to change the world through YFC. But God said to me that this reason isn`t a good reason for me to serve Him. He said that if I serve Him only for this reason sooner or later I would lose the passion, lose the spirit, and lose the willingness to serve Him because if this is the only reason I am doing these things I would be focusing myself in the structures, technicalities, and events of our community and would really not last. Then I asked God what should be the reason? God reminded me that to Love Him will all of my strength, with all of my mind, and with all of my heart. I said to God that I love Him because I worship Him; He then said that to love Him is to love the least of our brethren “when I was hungry you gave me food…whatever you do unto the least of these you do it unto me” God indeed affirmed me that loving Him isn’t measured how good we worship but how we love the least of our brethren so for me I will continue to love God, to love the poor, I will continue to serve in Gawad Kalinga because through here I will have the right reason why I serve and this reason would sustain me and will make me a better person for my God. So I passed on this question that God gave to me: Why do you serve God?

Worship
by Trixi Villalon
YFC Davao

Here in YFC, the most popular way of worship is singing and praising. Personally, I really do prefer this type of worship. The reason why I prefer this type of worship is because I feel that the message I want to give to God is in the lyrics. The music adds feeling into the words that I want to tell the Lord.

However, I learned a little something from the book(The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren) I`m reading. I was sitting, reading the book while listening to the song Adonai and then I had an epiphany.

I realized from the book that I was reading that what I worship does not matter. It`s a very common misconception that worshiping is only limited to singing and praising and it isn`t. You can worship to the Lord just by writing, dancing, planting, reading and other simple tasks that we usually take for granted as mere hobbies. You can worship the Lord just by doing these tasks AND dedicating it to the Lord.

It`s how you show your love best to the Lord. If you feel that a certain type of task will best portray your love to God and Jesus then do it because you are worshiping God. This way of worshiping is what pleases God the most. You can now not only praise Him during our events but everyday and every moment of your life. Worshiping doesn`t have to be grand or something but it can be as simple as writing as long as you know it shows your love to the Lord.

"What you worship matters not, how you worship does."

Only God can give me an incredible high
by Nikki Milan
YFC Davao

The move to college has brought about so many changes in my life. Aside from the heavier workload for schoolwork, the culture shock was indeed brought about by the environment and the people around me.

I have a handful of friends and blockmates who smoke and drink during breaks in between periods. I was invited a couple of times to join them in their drink fests and smoking escapades. I was offered a smoke at times, or a bottle of Red Horse on some occasions but I would decline the offer without hesitation. On one occasion, a blockmate even organized a party for us and threw in a case of Red Horse for some "added fun". My blockmate personally invited me to attend his party, checking up on me from time to time if I decided to go. I was supposed to, until I found out about the case of Red Horse. I only wanted to experience camaraderie among my blockmates, who were mostly new faces, which could have been possible even without the sticks of cigarettes and bottles of beer. I was called a "kill joy" when I decided not to go. It felt really different to be dubbed with such a name. Although I did regret not attending the party, I still had fun with friends who have been a positive influence in my life and spent an alcohol and smoke free afternoon with them, away from all the negative influences that were going on during the party. I never intended to keep myself away from my blockmates. It was just a personal choice to stay sober and smoke free. I really wouldn`t mind being called a "kill joy" for not attending this kind of activity because I and my Lord truly know that I am not. I am constantly assured that I am not a "kill joy". I am just different. I want to be different. To stand out in a clean and positive way. It was indeed a test of faith for me, and I am proud to say that I came out triumphant! The jubilant feeling is incomparable, knowing that God knows that I have decided not to engage in such activities. I don`t blame people for being that way. They just lack guidance and faith. They need our prayers.

I have to admit that being 100% Pure is not easy, especially now that I am in college with all the negative influences circulating just about anywhere. Drinking and smoking is indeed unavoidable for most teens.

If not for my strong foundation in the community, I would have probably been drinking and smoking during my free cuts in between classes. I would probably be coming in to my next class intoxicated, with the strong, lingering smell of cigarettes. If not for the 100% Pure lifestyle, who knows what we could have been! To me, it is a saving grace. I just think of them as curious kids tinkering with things that all the more arouse their curiosity. In the end, they regret everything they did. So they say smoking and drinking improves your image and your social status. It makes you look "cooler". Well, does lung and liver cancer make you cooler as well? I`d rather not experience drunkenness even in my youth, because I want to live longer to serve my Lord. I truly believe that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and it would be a powerful instrument in fulfilling my mission here on earth. I may be young and inexperienced but I am one of those few who are willing to give these up just so I could prove to the world that a number of teens are still willing to stand up for the Lord. I need not a box of the finest tobacco cigarettes or a bottle of vodka to make me feel high. Sooner or later, that would just wear away. It would only be temporary. Only God could ever give me an incredible high that would last me a lifetime, more powerful than consuming countless bottles of beer or a box of cigarettes, and still remain 100% pure. I choose to serve my Lord against all odds brought about by the modern world. I dare to be different. I choose to be 100% Pure for my Lord.

Third Graders Make Smooth Move for Classmate

Eight Utah elementary students are showing their support of a fellow classmate by taking one for the team.

When third-grader Emmalee Havertz missed a whole month of school for treatment of a rare liver cancer, the course of chemotherapy caused her to lose her hair. A student's mom, Cari Carroll, decided she'd rally the boys in the class to show Havertz how much they care by ... shaving their heads! "I thought this was something they could give back to her and show support for her and say, 'I did something for someone else,'" Carroll explained.

And do something they did! With help from one boy's grandpa -- a local barber -- the kids set up a video camera and recorded the whole event. As the eight boys got buzzed, newly shorn classmate Tyler said, "We're going to shave our heads 'cause Emmalee Havertz has cancer and she lost her hair; so we're going to show her that she's not alone and we can shave our heads, too!"

As for Emmalee, she received a DVD of the whole event to lift her spirits before her second round of chemo. Smooth move, indeed!

If Love is Blind, is God Blind too?
by Trixi Villalon
YFC Davao

Love is Blind, as the saying goes. Most people believe in it too since there have been cases of people falling in love with not so attractive people(even with follow up questions from friends, "Pano ka ginayuma?). This love is unconditional and without regard. If this is so, then is God blind? God personifies love and so God IS love. A lot of people have learned this withing and without school.

Let`s say that God really is blind, then how would He know what we were doing and when to protect us from harm? How was he able to sculpt us into His likeness? How can he tell one human from another? No, God is not Blind and Love isn`t blind. Who is blind then? The lovers. Us, the mere mortals are blind. Blind in a sense that we no longer care how one looks physically. We, in a way, become "blind" on how we perceive. When our sense of sight for physical aspects becomes indifferent, another kind of sense will be heightened to a degree that enables on to "see" in a different manner. A manner in which God always wanted us to view life. Seeing with our hearts.

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye" - The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint Exupéry.
